The classic adage is, “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” At Harbor Ministries, we want to teach men how to be productive members of society to help them not just today, but for the rest of their lives. We want to teach the message of Christ’s love to every man and show him that he has worth.
Jesus told his followers, “What you have done for the least of my brothers, you have done for me.” It is in this spirit that we seek to help men with drug and alcohol problems, those recently released from prison, and men who just need a fresh start in life. While it is extremely important to make sure that these men eat on a daily basis, we know that it is just important to give these men the tools they need to feed themselves.
To achieve this, we combine three important approaches. First, we teach these men the Bible in order to help them learn about Christ’s love and help them build self-esteem. Second, we teach these men a vocational skill to help them earn a living. Third, we teach them life skills classes to help them manage their money and function in society. We can help men affect change in their lives and in society. While we may not be able to completely end chronic homelessness, we can certainly help make this number as small as possible.
If you have money, vehicles, clothing, or other items to donate, consider giving them to Harbor Ministries. As a Houston Faith Based Charity, we work to build these men up with a message of the love of Jesus Christ and positivity that they can change their lives.
